Transition from Military to Nursing program at Alamo Colleges?

Anybody have experiences transitioning from the military to the nursing program at Alamo Colleges? Did your military experiences help in the admissions? Can't seem to find a lot of info about this online. Thanks!

The process of transitioning from the military to a nursing program can often be a bit different than for civilian students, as your military experience can indeed help you throughout this process. Schools often appreciate the dedication, discipline, and unique real-life experiences that military veterans can bring to their programs. In fact, the health-related experience you may have gained in the military could enrich your studies and future practices in nursing.

In particular, Alamo Colleges, like many institutions, participates in the ACE (American Council on Education) recommendation for academic credit for military experience, which could potentially give you credit for some of your military training. Not all of your military service and training may translate to nursing prerequisites, but it can demonstrate to admissions your commitment, discipline, and ability to work under pressure, which are highly valued in nursing.

It would be beneficial to reach out to Admissions or a Veterans Services office at Alamo Colleges for more information about how your specific military experiences might be viewed in the admissions process. They can also help guide you through the application process and identify resources that might be available to you as a military veteran.

One resource to consider, if you haven't already, is using benefits available through the GI Bill, which can provide financial support toward your education.

Remember to highlight your applicable experiences during the application process - while there might not be a dedicated box or question for them, your resume, essays and/or interviews could be a good platform to discuss your military experience and how it has prepared you for a nursing career.

Your objective, as with any applicant, should be to present in your application a clear picture of who you are and how your unique experiences have prepared you for this goal. You can certainly leverage your military experience as part of that picture. Good luck with your application!
