Applying to college while in the military, how does it work?

Joining the military soon and seriously considering applying to college soon afterwards. Has anyone does this before? Can I get some advice on how to balance things? Or maybe some tips on programs that might work best for someone with an unpredictable schedule like mine? Thanks!

First off, kudos to you for considering this big step! Being in the military does require careful thought in managing your schedule, but it's definitely possible to balance that with college classes.

One of the first things you might want to consider is whether you want to obtain your degree through a traditional brick-and-mortar university or you would find an online program better suited to your needs. Online programs are designed with flexibility in mind, which can be a major benefit for active duty military personnel. You can complete your coursework whenever you have free time, irrespective of your location.

As part of the military, you also have resources like tuition assistance (TA) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill at your disposal. Military TA can cover up to 100% of your tuition fees at accredited colleges and universities, making tuition costs less of a burden. On the other hand, the Post-9/11 GI Bill offers benefits for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service.

Before you apply, it's important to research institutions and their respective programs. Look for programs that are military-friendly, offering resources and supports geared specifically towards service members. These might include a dedicated military liaison on-staff, flexible withdrawal policies in case of deployment, and credit for military training.

One resource you might find helpful is the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) program, which is composed of colleges and universities committed to helping servicemen and servicewomen earn their degrees. SOC schools have flexible policies for military students and might recognize military training and experiences for college credit.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all approach when applying to colleges while in the military. It all depends on your personal goals, your field of interest, and the extent of your service commitments. Reach out to any potential schools' admissions offices to discuss your situation. Each school should be able to help you navigate the process and make a plan that suits your unique needs.
