Are All Colleges Military Friendly?

Hey folks, just a quick question. Are all colleges 'military friendly', or do some institutions offer more support and resources for service members and veterans? Any recommendations for colleges that are particularly military-friendly?

While many colleges aim to be military friendly, the level of support they offer to service members and veterans can vary. Being military friendly can mean different things. Some institutions have specific programs and resources in place to support military-affiliated students, like veterans' centers, special counseling, and academic support. Others may prioritize providing generous financial aid, or having flexible scheduling for those on active duty.

There is an annual list published by the Military Friendly® Schools survey that rates colleges and universities according to their commitment to serving military and veteran students. Institutions that are commonly recognized as military-friendly include Syracuse University, Florida State University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Florida.

Some schools like Syracuse University have an Office of Veteran Success providing career services, academic advising, tutoring, and professional development opportunities to military and veteran students. Florida State University has its own Veterans Center that operates as an advocate for veteran education, providing resources and support for veterans, their families and dependents.

In terms of financial support, many colleges participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides extra financial aid to veterans attending private schools or out-of-state public schools whose tuition exceeds the maximum base pay amount under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

In short, it's crucial to research and consider your specific needs as a service member or veteran when choosing a college. Consider factors like the presence of student veteran organizations, availability of specific counseling and support services, course flexibility for active-duty personnel, and funding opportunities under programs like the Yellow Ribbon Program.
