What are the Challenges for Military and Going to College?

Hey guys, I am thinking of joining the military after high school and then going to college. What kind of challenges should I prepare for if I choose this path? Any first-hand experiences would be appreciated.

The decision to join the military before heading to college can come with some unique challenges, but it can also provide immense rewards.

One of the most common challenges is the transition phase. Going from a highly structured military environment into the relative freedom of a college campus can feel overwhelming at times. Many students transitioning from military to college life sometimes struggle with adapting to the different expectations and norms on campus.

Another challenge could be the age difference between you and other college students. If you've spent years in the military, you may be older than the traditional college student, which might make relating to classmates harder.

Sleep patterns can also be disrupted. Military schedules tend to be early and very structured, while college schedules can vary widely. Often times classes, study groups, or social activities can stretch late into the night.

Financially, it's crucial to understand how your military benefits can support your college education. Without proper planning, you might find yourself without enough funding to cover the entirety of your education.

Academically, depending on your military specialty, you may find some of your previous knowledge or experience doesn't directly transfer into college credits, and you might need to take introductory courses where you already feel proficient.

While these challenges might seem daunting, remember that there are a lot of support systems in place to help. Veterans Affairs offices, fellow veterans, and college counselors can provide resources and guidance. Many colleges even have organizations where you can connect with other student veterans to share experiences and advice.

It's also important to keep in mind that serving in the military can also provide big advances, such as leadership experience and discipline, which can certainly contribute positively to your college experience and beyond.
