Life After Serving: Attending College

Hey guys. I am contemplating joining the military right after high school but I have plans to attend college afterwards. Does anyone have advice or experiences they could share about transitioning from the military to a college environment?

Transitioning from the military to a college environment can be quite a shift, but there are resources in place to make this transition smoother. First, you'll want to investigate the GI Bill, which provides educational assistance to service members, veterans, and their dependents who meet certain eligibility standards. It can provide funding for tuition, housing, and books, helping to ease the financial strain of returning to school.

In terms of adapting to college life and workload after the highly structured military environment, self-discipline can help. The skills you develop in the military — such as perseverance, leadership, and teamwork — can add to your success in a college setting.

Also, consider applying to colleges that have supportive services for veterans. Many colleges have a point person (or even an office) dedicated to helping veteran students adjust to campus life and succeed acadically. They can help with things such as accessing benefits, juggling academic responsibilities, and connecting with other veteran students.

Remember that your military service counts as a compelling, non-traditional educational path, so don't forget to highlight your service experience in your college applications!

Lastly, as you're considering your options, reach out to veterans who've transitioned to college life for guidance and support. They were once in your place, looking for advice on the transition, and could provide valuable tips from their own experience.
