Post-Military College Experience?

Honest question here. I'm thinking about enlisting after high school then planning on going to college after serving. Has anyone done this and was it beneficial?

While I have not gone through this experience personally, I can offer some insights based on what I've seen and heard from students who have chosen this path. Enlisting in the military before pursuing higher education has both benefits and challenges.

The primary advantage is the tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities that come with military service. The G.I. Bill, for example, provides significant financial aid for veterans aiming to obtain an undergraduate or graduate degree. This could greatly reduce, or even entirely cover, your tuition costs depending on several factors.

Moreover, the life experience, discipline, and skills you would acquire during your military service could prove beneficial in many ways. These experiences could help mature you further and give you a clearer perspective on what you want in life and from your higher education.

Nevertheless, transitioning from military service to civilian life and college can present some challenges. The age and experience gap between you and traditional undergraduates could potentially lead to some feelings of disconnect. Also, adjusting to a less structured and self-directed environment may take time.

Yet, many colleges have excellent resources and support systems for veteran students - from special orientation programs to counseling services and dedicated staff members. Researching which colleges offer robust support for veterans would be advantageous.

In summary, while enlisting before university does have its pros and cons, many veterans find it a rewarding path that allows them to bring a unique perspective and maturity to their undergraduate experience while also mitigating the financial burden of higher education. It's a decision to consider seriously, with careful research and thought about what you want out of both your military service and your eventual college experience.
