College and Military Excused Absences - What's the Policy?

I'm thinking about enrolling in college while also serving part-time in the military. Does anyone know how professors handle military excused absences typically? I wouldn't want my GPA to suffer because of my service. Thanks everyone!

Typically, universities are supportive of students who are also serving in the military and have policies in place to accommodate their needs. They usually recognize the importance of your military obligations and expectations.

However, each university can have different policies, so it might be best to check with each institution's specific rules. Universities may have guidelines on how to handle military excused absences, which may include providing alternative ways to make up for missed coursework or exams, flexibility in assignment due dates, or alternative ways of considering participation grades.

That said, communication is key. You should inform your professors about your military commitments at the beginning of the semester, and keep them updated about upcoming training or deployment activities that may require you to miss class. Many professors will be supportive when they understand your situation and you communicate with them proactively and respectfully.

It’s also worthwhile to look into the resources and supports that universities have for student veterans and active duty military personnel. Many schools have veterans service centers or similar offices that specialize in supporting students who have military commitments and can offer helpful advice or assistance.

Remember, your commitment to serving your country is an important part of who you are and universities will often do their best to help facilitate your education in tandem with your military duties.
