Seeking Best Colleges for Ecology Majors

Hello folks, I'm really passionate about Ecology and I'm starting to look into colleges. Any suggestions on the best colleges for an ecology major? What should I be considering when choosing schools for my major?

Great to see you're leaning into your passion for ecology! There are many colleges that have strong programs in ecology.

The first set of colleges you should consider are large research universities, as they typically offer a variety of courses, have strong faculty, and provide students with research opportunities. This category would include schools like the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of California-Berkeley, and Cornell University. These schools all have highly-ranked programs in ecology.

Liberal arts colleges are another category worth considering. While these colleges are smaller and may not offer as many courses in ecology, they typically offer small class sizes, which means more direct attention from faculty, and more opportunities to engage deeply with your studies. Middlebury College and College of the Atlantic notably have exceptional programs in environmental studies, with a heavy emphasis on ecology.

As for what you should be considering when choosing a school, think about the following factors: curriculum (look for a broad range of courses in various aspects of ecology), opportunities for research or fieldwork (extremely important in the field of ecology), faculty (working with experienced and well-regarded faculty can enhance your learning), location (proximity to diverse ecosystems for on-site learning—think coastlines, forests, deserts etc.), and lastly, internship/career opportunities (access to potential employers or organizations that interest you).

Bear in mind these suggestions aren't exhaustive, and there are plenty of other colleges out there with strong programs in ecology. You may have other factors that are important to you (like school size, location, campus culture, etc.) that will play into your decision as well. Good luck with the search!
