Can you recommend public colleges with great History programs?

Hello! I'm currently a high school rising junior who can't imagine studying anything but History when I get to college. However, I'd prefer a public institution due to cost reasons. Can any History majors or anyone else familiar with this field recommend some top public colleges for History majors?

Absolutely, there are a number of highly-regarded public institutions with excellent History programs. Here are a select few:

1. University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley): Known for its strong faculty, this history program offers a wide array of courses covering many time periods and geographical areas. Their program emphasizes research, critical analysis, and writing skills.

2. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): UCLA's History Department covers a wide range of geographical, temporal, and thematic fields, making it a great place for a broad-based history education.

3. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (UMich): With a large selection of geographic areas of study and a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches, history students at UMich receive comprehensive training in connecting past and present.

4. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill): The History Department at UNC Chapel Hill has strong connections with other departments, providing an opportunity to explore interdisciplinary studies.

5. University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC): UIUC's History program includes faculty with many different specializations, giving students a lot of choices for their studies.

6. University of Texas, Austin (UT Austin): The History Department at UT Austin provides students with a wide variety of thematic, geographical, and methodological approaches to their studies. It's also known to be particularly strong in Latin American history.

7. University of Virginia (UVA): The history department at UVA has a reputation for rigorous and interesting class discussions. Particular strengths include Southern and U.S. history, but they offer courses in many other areas.

Remember, while these are some top picks, you should also consider factors like location, size, campus culture, and financial aid offerings when choosing a college. It would be helpful to study the history department websites of these schools to get a better understanding of what each program offers and to see which would best cater to your specific interests within the field of History.
