Looking for Best Universities for Literature Majors

Hi all, I'm a junior this year and planning ahead for college. I've always been passionate about English Literature and plan on majoring in it. Can anyone help me figure out the best schools for literature majors? I don't necessarily need Ivy Leagues, I'm more focused on strong faculty and a reputation for a well-taught, rigorous program. Thanks!

While many prestigious schools have notable English Literature programs, you might want to consider the specifics of the program rather than the university's overall prestige. In fact, 'strong faculty' and well-taught, rigorous programs are available in many universities that are not necessarily Ivy Leagues.

University of Chicago has a well-established English Literature program, known for its emphasis on critical and theoretical approaches to literature. Many students appreciate the rigorous coursework and the wide range of literary works covered.

Stanford's English department is also highly regarded. It offers an extensive research program, allowing students to delve deeper into their specific areas of interest.

UC Berkeley's English department offers a variety of concentrations, including Creative Writing, which is not always available within English departments. They also offer breadth in terms of historical period literature courses, so if you're someone who loves dipping into different time frames, this could be a good fit for you.

University of Virginia has a long-standing reputation for its literature program and they house the rare books collection in the Alderman library— a treasure for literature students.

Building a connection with the faculty could contribute to your overall experience. Consider examining faculty profiles and their published works. This could help you to evaluate if their fields of expertise align with your areas of interest.

Moreover, you would want to consider the overall environment of the university: the size, location, and the opportunities for internships related to your field.

Remember, 'fit' is as important (if not more) as rankings in deciding what would be the best school for you. Always take the time to virtually tour, connect with current students or faculty and thoroughly research the curriculum before making your decision.
