Choosing the right college is always a toss-up, but it gets even harder when you're sure about your major; Mathematics, in my case. Could you guys share your favorite Mathematics major institutions? I'd also love to hear about what distinguishes their Mathematics program from others, whether it's the curriculum, faculty, or resources.
MIT consistently ranks very highly for its Mathematics program. It offers a broad and deep curriculum that covers everything from pure mathematics to applied math. Studying there, you'll gain both theoretical knowledge as well as practical applications. The faculty consists of highly renowned mathematicians who have won prestigious awards – such as the Fields Medal. Additionally, the resources available to students are pretty extensive, including MATLab, a thriving mathematics library, and several student-run math groups.
The University of Chicago also has an excellent Mathematics program. Its curriculum provides a thorough grounding in both pure and applied mathematics at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. It's known for fostering great mathematical minds, thanks in part to its committed faculty. The school places a distinct emphasis on research; students often have opportunities to participate in research programs, some of which result in publishing opportunities. This could definitely give a boost to a future career in academia or research.
I'd like to bring up Caltech as another worthy institution. The institution is small and has a relatively lower student-faculty ratio, which allows for personalized attention. In terms of resources, Caltech offers a significant number of research opportunities, highly advanced laboratories, and the chance for undergraduates to tackle complex mathematical concepts. Something worth mentioning is that, in collaboration with Jet Propulsion Lab, Caltech students have unique opportunities to work on NASA assignments – an exciting prospect for any math enthusiast.
