Choosing between Police Department vs Military Post-College

Hey, I'm currently a rising junior in high school, planning on attending college. Post-college, I'm torn between joining the police force or enlisting in the military. I would love if anyone could give me any insight into the pros and cons of each, especially from the perspective of a college graduate or a retired military veteran. Thanks!

Joining the police force and enlisting in the military both have unique sets of opportunities and challenges, particularly for college graduates.

Starting with the police force, a key advantage is the direct opportunity to serve your community. Police work has the potential for ample personal interaction and has a relatively conventional work schedule for a larger part of the force. As a college graduate, you'll likely enter at a higher rank or pay grade compared to a non-degree holder. Most police departments also have opportunities for advancement, especially for those with a college degree.

However, the work can be mentally and physically challenging, as it often involves confronting difficult, perhaps dangerous, situations and managing high-stress incidents. You'll need a solid understanding of the legal framework and strong decision-making skills.

On the other hand, choosing to enlist in the military post-college could open up potential for roles requiring a college degree, such as officer positions. These roles often provide leadership opportunities right away and access to further training. Military service also offers numerous benefits, such as housing stipends, health care, and retirement plans. It can also lead to a broad spectrum of experiences as you may have the chance to be stationed around the country or even abroad.

However, joining the military can often involve being away from family for long periods, which may be a con for some. It can also be physically and mentally demanding, especially during times of conflict.

Ultimately, the choice between police force and military will depend upon your personal career goals, interests, and life situation. Many people find both routes highly rewarding as each provides avenues to serve and protect others.
