Seeking Information on College Support for Military Children in Georgia

I'm in my junior year, looking at post-high school plans and considering college. My parent was in the military, and we're based in Georgia. Can someone help me understand if there are any state-provided college assistance or grants for military children residing here?

Absolutely, there are several programs and grants available for dependents of military members in Georgia that you might find beneficial.

One such program is the Georgia Military College State Service Scholarship Grant. This offers financial assistance to students planning to attend the Georgia Military College. The grant is available to children of active duty, retired, and deceased military personnel.

Also, you might want to take a look at the Georgia Hero Scholarship. This is available for the children of Georgia residents who are permanently disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty. The scholarship covers tuition, mandatory fees, and a book allowance up to four years of full-time undergraduate study.

Another initiative is the Georgia National Guard Service Cancelable Loan, designed to encourage Georgia residents to join the Georgia National Guard and attend college. However, this does require service in the National Guard.

Also, while not Georgia-specific, there's the Military Dependents Scholarship Program (Fry Scholarship) under the Post-9/11 GI Bill which provides educational support for dependents of military members who died in the line of service after September 10, 2001.

Remember, the criteria, benefits and application process for each of these vary. I’d recommend reaching out to your chosen schools' veteran services or financial aid office for more information. It's also advisable to pursue general scholarships as well, given the competitive nature of military-specific aid. Good luck with your search!
