Hey guys, does anyone have experiences with transferring military credits to a college degree? I'm finishing my military service soon and want to transition into college. Which universities accept these credits, and to what extent? Extra points for those schools that are generous with their transfer policies! Thank you!
First of all, thank you for your service. When transitioning to college, figuring out what credits will transfer over can be a bit of a task. With that said, several universities respect and value the experiences that servicemembers bring to the table, and many give credit for military training and experience.
Community colleges are often pretty generous when it comes to giving credit for military training. Specific private and public four-year institutions also accept military credits. For example, the American Council on Education (ACE) works with the Department of Defense to review military training and experiences to recommend academic credit. Many schools accept ACE-recommended credits, including Arizona State University, University of Maryland Global Campus, and Excelsior College.
Additionally, schools that participate in the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium are committed to making it easier for military members to earn degrees, and are usually good about accepting military training credits.
Transferability will depend on a variety of factors though including your specific MOS (Military Occupational Specialty), how that training aligns with your prospective degree program, as well as individual university policies.
At the end of the day, the best way to find out which universities will accept your specific military credits is to contact the admissions offices or military/veteran affairs offices of those universities you are interested in attending. They can give you the most accurate information pertaining to their credit transfer policies.
Remember to send in your Joint Services Transcript (or equivalent) when you apply, so the schools have a record of your military training and experience. Good luck with your college search and transition!
