University of Maryland and Military.. is there a connection?

Hi all, I've been considering joining the military after high school, but I'm also really interested in the University of Maryland. Is there a specific relationship between the military and UMD that I should be aware of? Could it potentially benefit me as a student there?

The University of Maryland has a strong connection to the military through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs and the university's proximity to several military installations.

ROTC is a collegiate program designed to prepare students to become officers in the U.S. Military. UMD offers ROTC programs for the Army, Air Force, and Navy, which can give you the opportunity to combine a military career with a college education. By joining one of these programs, you could potentially have your tuition partially or fully covered through scholarships, depending on your status. You'd also enter into active military service after graduation, typically as a Second Lieutenant in the Army or Air Force, or an Ensign in the Navy.

In addition to ROTC, UMD offers veteran support services and resources for military-affiliated students, like the Veteran Student Life office.

UMD's location, close to Washington D.C., also means that it's in close proximity to several significant military facilities, such as the Pentagon and Joint Base Andrews. This could provide you with unique opportunities for internships, networking, or other professional development.

While each student's situation is unique, UMD's military connections could potentially facilitate your transition from military service to a university environment, or vice versa. If you choose to go to college before serving, these programs may support you in doing so financially while preparing you for a military career. Conversely, if you serve before going to college, UMD's location and services for military-affiliated students can help you integrate into academic life after your service.
