Re-enrollment Policy for Military Service Students

Hey guys, so I know some of you have insights on this one. What's the policy for college re-enrollment if a student had to withdraw for military service? Anyone has firsthand experience or knows someone in this situation? Just curious because my military commitment might overlap with my college years.

Certainly, this is a valid concern, particularly if you're planning on committing to military service which often requires a time commitment that can overlap with college. Many colleges have policies designed to accommodate students in this exact situation, believing in the importance of supporting students who are fulfilling their duty to the nation.

Most colleges usually have a "Leave of Absence" policy specifically for military service. This policy often allows the college to hold your spot for the period of your military commitment, and permits a seamless re-enrollment upon your return. There is usually a set maximum length for this leave, often around two years, although extensions can often be granted for military service.

In the United States, under the Higher Education Opportunity Act, schools are required to readmit service members with the same academic status as when they last attended so long as they were not absent for more than five years due to military service. This means you would return to the same academic standing, program, and with the same number of completed credits as you had before your service.

It's also worth noting that sometimes, military service can count towards college credit. You might want to check with your school to see if this is something they offer.

However, bear in mind that policies can vary from institution to institution. The policy I just described is a general approach and may differ at your particular school. Make sure to get in touch with your college's Registrar or Student Services office to understand the specific policy governance at your school.
