Is a leadership class in high school valuable for college apps?

I have an option to take a leadership class at my school and I'm curious if admissions officers care about this kind of class? Does it really help develop skills that colleges look for, or just look good on paper?

Hello there! It's wonderful to hear that you're considering taking a leadership class. From my experience, admissions officers value courses that show your initiative to grow and develop skills, and a leadership class can absolutely reflect that. However, this class's value is not just in the title but in how you apply the skills learned.

For instance, if the class teaches you about public speaking, conflict resolution, or event planning, you could mention in your applications how you used these abilities to contribute to school or community projects. Colleges do appreciate seeing how applicants take what they've learned and put it into action. Plus, these are lifelong skills that can serve you well beyond college too. If the class requires you to take on leadership roles or work on projects that have a meaningful impact, these experiences can add depth to your application, especially if they align with your interests and goals.

In short, the class itself will look good on paper, but the real value comes from engagement and the tangible outcomes of your learning. And of course, please remember that this is just one aspect of your entire application. Make sure to balance your schedule to continue excelling academically and pursue extracurricular activities that you're passionate about. I'm here if you have more questions or need to talk this decision through further!
