Financial Aid for Military Siblings

Hey all, just getting started with the whole college application stuff. My older brother's serving in the military and I've heard about some scholarships available to the military families. So, are there any scholarships out there targeting military siblings for college?

Yes, indeed! There are a fair number of scholarships designed specifically for military families, including immediate family like siblings.

For instance, the "ThanksUSA Scholarship Program" is an initiative. It provides scholarships to spouses and dependents (including siblings) of US military service personnel. Each year, ThanksUSA offers up to 500 scholarships valued at $3,000 each. To qualify, you must be a dependent of a U.S. military service member and planning to enroll in an undergraduate program at an accredited university.

Another source is the "Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Scholarship Fund". It extends educational assistance for children of currently or formerly serving military members. Although it's primarily granted to children of deceased or disabled veterans, it encompasses a wide range of military families.

The "Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships" is another good one. It's open to dependents of those who have died or have become disabled through their active military service, including both siblings and offspring of military personnel.

Lastly, make sure to check if your state provides any benefits to military family members. A number of states have programs that help cover the cost of tuition for military dependents. For example, California offers the CalVet College Tuition Fee Waiver, that waives mandatory system-wide tuition and fees at any State of California Community College, California State University, or University of California campus.

Don't forget to check out each scholarship's specific eligibility requirements and deadlines. Good luck with your scholarship search and upcoming college journey!
