Does a Paramedic Major Even Exist in College?

Currently in my junior year and considering a future as a paramedic. I've done some preliminary research, but I can't seem to find out if there are colleges that offer a major specifically in paramedic studies. Perhaps I'm missing something? Or should I focus on related fields like bio or nursing?

Yes, there are colleges that offer Paramedic Studies or similar programs, but they can be a bit harder to find as they aren't as widespread as some other health-focused majors like Nursing or Biology. These programs are commonly found at community colleges and trade schools and most often result in an associate degree.

Paramedic programs focus on providing urgent medical care, typically in an emergency or disaster setting, and include coursework such as Emergency Medical Systems, Basic Trauma Life Support, and Paramedic Responsibilities and Skills. Keep in mind that in addition to your coursework, you'll also need to complete a certain amount of practical training hours.

On the other hand, if you're planning on attending a four year institution or are thinking about options for further specialization down the road, taking a more comprehensive major like Nursing, Biology, or even Public Health may provide a solid foundation. Many paramedics often use their experience to move into allied health professions such as nursing or physician assisting, and having a bachelor's degree in a related field could help smooth that transition.

But remember, no matter which academic path you choose, becoming a paramedic will also require certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) after you've completed your education. So, be sure to choose an educational program that also prepares you for this examination.
