Virginia is home to several top-notch schools reputed for their strong English programs, and luckily for you, you will be able to take advantage of in-state tuition benefits.

Without a doubt, the University of Virginia (UVA) is definitely at the top of that list. UVA's English program is consistently ranked amongst the best in the country. They offer a thriving English department that encourages the exploration of a wide array of texts, authors, topics, and genres. The program's strength lies in its extensive course offerings, prominent faculty, an emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills.

Similarly, the College of William & Mary is another outstanding option. Unlike UVA, William & Mary is a liberal arts college, meaning the emphasis is primarily on undergraduate education. Their English program is highly reputed and offers a variety of focuses, including literary and cultural studies, creative writing, and English education.

Another great choice is Virginia Tech which also hosts a respected English department with a focus on rhetoric, writing and professional communication. This program may appeal particularly to students interested in situating their English studies within a practical career context. They also offer options in literature and language.

Whichever university you choose, remember to look beyond just the ranking of the program. Pay attention to factors such as program curriculum, class sizes, faculty, study abroad options, and internship opportunities. Also, remember to visit the campus if possible to get a real feel of the environment. Good luck on your college journey!
