Orchestras for Non-Music Majors?

Music is my passion, though I'm not planning to major in it. I still want to be a part of an orchestra in college. Can anyone recommend any universities with good orchestras where non-music majors are welcome?

You're in luck; many universities have orchestras that accept non-music majors, so you'll still be able to pursue your passion while studying. Here's some worth mentioning:

- Yale University has the Yale Symphony Orchestra, an undergraduate organization. While some members are music majors, many are studying other fields.

- Stanford University maintains several ensembles open to students from all disciplines. The Stanford Symphony Orchestra is an exciting choice.

- University of Pennsylvania has the Penn Symphony Orchestra that's open to non-music majors.

- University of Chicago's University Symphony Orchestra also welcomes non-music majors.

- At Harvard University, there's the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra comprised of undergraduates of all majors.

- MIT Symphony Orchestra is a performance ensemble open to students regardless of their major.

Each university has its audition process and rehearsal schedule. Therefore, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the details before you choose your school based on this factor. Moreover, keep in mind that availability may vary from year to year depending on the number of participants and their skill levels. In general, choosing a college that aligns with your academic interests and also has a vibrant music program should allow you the best of both worlds. Reaching out to the orchestra directors or asking for more information from the admissions office of the schools you're interested in can also be a great way to get more detailed and personalized information.
