Looking for Top Colleges worldwide for Classics Majors

Hey gang, I'm really passionate about classics and gonna major in it. I was wondering, does anyone know which are the best colleges around the world for this field? I'd appreciate any advice or guidance!

Absolutely, it's great to hear that you're interested in classics as your major. I can definitely provide some recommendations for strong classics programs:

1. The University of Oxford (UK): Their "Literae Humaniores" program, often referred to as 'Greats', is highly reputed worldwide and one of the oldest classical studies courses. The course offers a comprehensive study of the Classical world through the lenses of literature, philosophy, and archaeology.

2. Harvard University (USA): Harvard's Classical Languages and Literatures program is highly acclaimed. A distinct feature is its integrated examination approach which unifies classical languages (both Greek and Latin) and literatures alongside classical history.

3. Stanford University (USA): Stanford has a solid Classics program. This program offers a diverse curriculum with focusing on the literature, culture, and history of Greek and Roman antiquity.

4. Cambridge University (UK): The Faculty of Classics at Cambridge is one of the most distinguished in the world and caters to every aspect of the study of the ancient world. The university offers an undergrad course, known as the Classical Tripos, which encompasses the study of the culture, history, philosophy, literature, and linguistics of classical antiquity

5. Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg (Germany): The university has several more specialized degree programs in areas related to classics, including Classical and Modern Literature, Classical Archaeology, and Greek/Classical Philology. If you already have particular interests within the broader field of classics, this institution could be a great fit for you.

6. Australian National University (Australia): ANU's Classical Studies program is reputed, with comprehensive units in both Greek and Roman literature, language, philosophy, history and archaeology.

Do remember, while these universities are renowned for their programs, your choice should also consider factors such as cultural fit, financial considerations, location, and your academic profile. It's best to do some research into each university's curriculum and see which one aligns with your educational goals, and, for those in other countries, make sure you look into the differences in the educational systems. For example, European universities typically don't have as much of a sense of campus community as American residential colleges, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but is something you want to be aware of.

Good luck with your applications!
