What Major Classes Should I Take If I'm Interested in Real Estate?

I have always been interested in the real estate market and I'm considering a major that could help me dive into this industry. What kind of college classes or majors would give me a thorough understanding and practical skills for a real estate career?

A college major in real estate, finance, or business would typically be the most directly beneficial for a real estate career. However, a major in economics or even law could also be useful due to the multi-disciplinary nature of real estate.

Real estate majors will give you a comprehensive education in topics such as real estate law, property development, property management, and investment strategies. Look for courses that deal with real estate principles, real estate law, real estate finance, property management, and real estate investment.

If a real estate major isn't available, a business or finance major could work well. These courses of study equip you with business skills applicable to a wide range of industries, including real estate. Consider courses that cover principles of finance, business law, business ethics, economics, and management.

Economics can also be a good choice, as real estate often involves understanding economic trends and the impact of the economic environment on property values. Consider microeconomics and macroeconomics courses, as well as those focused on finance and economic modeling.

Lastly, if you're considering the legal aspect of real estate (like contracts, property law, etc.), a pre-law course of study might be appropriate.

Beyond your major, internships in real estate companies or brokerages can provide hands-on experience and networking opportunities. Joining real estate clubs or organizations on campus can also give you a practical understanding of the industry.

Remember that real estate license requirements vary by state, so in most cases, you'll need to fulfill those requirements to sell real estate successfully. A college degree can be helpful, but isn't typically a requirement to receive a real estate license.
