Appropriate college major for the Foreign Service?

I'm a high school junior right now and have been thinking more and more seriously about aiming for a career in the Foreign Service. I understand that they accept a broad range of fields, but does anyone have any advice on a specific major that can help me prepare for an overseas career in diplomacy or international affairs?

Certainly, a career in the Foreign Service is an ambitious and rewarding path! There’s no specific major that guarantees success by any means, but a few fields of study do align well with the knowledge and skills needed in diplomacy and international affairs.

International Relations or International Studies is a common choice because it provides a broad foundation in global issues, politics, and policy. These programs often include study about international trade, security, and human rights, and may delve into specific regions or countries.

Political Science is another excellent choice, as it provides the opportunity to understand the structure and dynamics of different political systems, and may have a focus on international politics.

A liberal arts education can also be quite useful because it encourages critical thinking, communication skills, and a broad foundation in many subjects. Foreign Service officers are known to be well-rounded and able to tackle a variety of problems.

Moreover, given the nature of the Foreign Service, proficiency in a second language can be a significant benefit. Many FSOs have to pass a language exam, so studying a foreign language—or even majoring in one—can give you an edge.

Finally, if you have an interest in a specific region of the world, consider a major or minor in area studies focused on that region. This can provide a deeper understanding of the culture, language, history, and politics of the place you might be posted.

Remember that the Foreign Service values a breadth of knowledge! Your major isn’t the only factor in your preparation: taking diverse courses, learning languages, gaining relevant intern experience, and participating in activities that develop your leadership and interpersonal skills will all make valuable contributions to your career path.
