What's the preferred college major for government jobs?

I'm a high school junior and have recently been thinking about working in a government job after college. What college majors would be best if I want to increase my chances of securing a government job after graduation?

Government jobs can span a variety of fields, from policy-making and diplomacy to public health and law enforcement. Therefore, there isn't necessarily a "best" college major for all government jobs. However, there are certain majors that could increase your chances of securing a government job, particularly in specific departments or agencies.

Public policy or public administration majors are common choices for those seeking jobs in the public sector. They cover a range of subjects related to governance, policy-making procedures, public finance management, and leadership in the public sector. If you are interested in international affairs or diplomacy, consider international relations or political science.

If you're looking towards a career in environmental regulation or scientific research agencies, environmental science or biology could serve you well. If law enforcement or homeland security's your focus, criminal justice or criminology may be beneficial. For intelligence agencies, like the CIA or NSA, degrees in foreign languages, international studies, or cybersecurity could be advantageous.

Bear in mind that your skills and experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, count significantly. Internships or part-time jobs in local government, volunteering in community service, participating in debate clubs or model UN, and obtaining relevant certifications can bolster your resume and increase your chances of acquiring government employment post-graduation.

Also, remember that the government sector appreciates diverse knowledge bases and skill sets so your choice of a college major should ultimately align with your career goals and personal interests.
