A Major for Change: What to Study?

Okay, so I'm one of those kids who really wants to make a noticeable impact on the world. I'm looking at my college choices and I just keep wondering, which major should I pursue if I want to have the best shot at actually changing the world? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

There are numerous majors that can lead to meaningful change, depending on which issues you're most passionate about. If environmental issues worry you, consider Environmental Science or Sustainability Studies. If social justice resonates with you, Social Work or Sociology might be up your alley. Or, if you're captivated by the power of policy, look towards Political Science or Public Policy.

If global health is your passion, majors such as Public Health or Global Health could be the route to take. If you want to influence the economic systems, Economics could be a great choice. For those interested in technological advancement and its implications, Computer Science or Data Science could lead to revolutionary change.

Remember, though, that the major you choose isn't the only factor. It's what you do with your education that truly matters. Look for opportunities to engage with the issues that move you—through internships, research projects, community outreach, etc.

It's also crucial to keep in mind that not all work that leads to significant change is done in the field. The behind-the-scenes work, such as research, policy, funding, and strategy, is equally important, and the major you choose can help equip you for these roles.

So, instead of looking for a "best" major, focus more on what you're drawn to and what you feel you can excel in. After all, the most effective change-makers are often those who are deeply committed to and enthusiastic about their work. So, consider your passions, your strengths, and the type of impact you want to have, and go from there.
