Records Management Major - Worth It or Not?

Heya! I'm a high school junior really interested in record and data management. I've seen a few colleges that offer majors catering to this. But, I'm wondering how practical it is? Is it worth majoring in Records Management, or should it be something I pursue as a minor or electives? Would love your perspective!

There's no set answer to this, as the decision truly rests on your specific career ambitions and the way you envision your academic path unfolding. Records and data management is a sought-after field that is applicable in a variety of industries, from the healthcare sector to financial services and even government organizations. Many companies and industries are reliant on accurate record keeping, data management, and analytics.

However, do you see yourself wanting to venture into a narrower field related to this in the future, like data analytics, cybersecurity, or database management? If so, a broader major like Computer Science or Information Systems might offer you a varied skillset and then you could specialize in records management with a minor or electives. A major in these fields could potentially open more doors for you, especially if you're interested in industries that not only manage data but also analyze it to drive business results.

If you're committed to a career in records management, a degree in the field could be beneficial. Make sure to check the curriculum of the course - a good one will equip you with the variety of skills required to handle real-world data management problems. Look for programs that cover data privacy laws, archival science, and the latest database management tools.

Lastly, look into potential internship opportunities that could give you hands-on experience in records management. Take note of where students from these programs are getting interned and the type of roles they are stepping into post-graduation.

Remember, your decision doesn't have to be final right now. It's perfectly acceptable, and quite common, to switch majors once you've had a chance to dig deeper into your areas of interest. Use your first year at college to explore different courses and see what fits you best.
