Best Major for a future in UX Design?

Hi, I've recently taken an interest in UX design and I think I could imagine a career in it. As I start to look at colleges, I'm a bit confused about what major I should be looking for. Some people say Graphic Design, others say Computer Science. Are there specific majors that would set me up well for a career in UX design? What are your thoughts?

Sure, UX Design is an interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of psychology, business, market research, design, and technology. Different majors can certainly lead to a successful career in UX Design.

1. Graphic Design: This major is a common choice for many aspiring UX designers since it provides a strong foundation in design principles, color theory, typography, etc. However, graphic design leans more towards visual design and might not cover much about interaction design or user research.

2. Computer Science: From the technological perspective, a Computer Science major is beneficial for a UX designer. It helps you understand the possibilities and constraints of the technology that will bring your designs to life. Having this knowledge can improve collaboration with developers. However, it is not likely to provide a deep dive into design or user psychology.

3. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI): HCI is directly relevant to UX design, focusing on the interactions between human users and computers. Programs with a strong HCI focus could provide a comprehensive set of skills for a UX designer, from understanding user needs, to designing entire interfaces.

4. Psychology: Since a significant part of UX design involves understanding users and their behavior, majoring in psychology can provide valuable insights. However, it would be important to supplement this major with design and technology coursework.

5. Interactive Media or Interaction Design: These majors look at how users interact with technology and how to create experiences that are intuitive and enjoyable.

6. Information Systems: This major focuses on the interaction between people and technology from a more systems-oriented perspective and can offer useful insights for UX design.

Remember, UX Design requires a mix of skills and knowledge from psychology, business, design, and technology, so courses in all these areas would be beneficial. A lot of the learning in this field comes from hands-on experience. Look for programs that offer internships, co-ops, or other opportunities to apply what you learn in class to real-world design challenges.
