University of Colorado Colorado Springs for English Major

Hello. I'm seriously considering the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for my English major studies, but I wanted to hear some opinions first. If there are any students from UCCS on here, could you share your experiences in the English department? Thank you!

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) offers a Bachelor of Arts in English which is divided into literature and rhetoric & writing, providing different career and academic paths. The English department emphasizes small class sizes, encouraging robust discussions and offering personalized attention from professors. You will have the opportunity to explore different topics and genres, from classic literature to contemporary works, and from craft of writing to techniques of argumentation.

On top of traditional coursework, the department provides opportunities for students to gain real-world experience. UCCS English majors can intern at regional newspapers, magazines, and broadcast stations, which provides practical writing and editing experience. UCCS also hosts a student literary and arts journal, riverrun, which students can join to hone their editorial, design, and marketing skills.

Freshman students have the option to begin their UCCS education with a deep dive into rhetoric and writing: https://english.uccs.edu/academics/first-year-rhetoric-writing. If you're passionate about classical writing and starting with rigorous instruction right away, this might be the program for you.

While each student's experiences can vary greatly, these structural aspects of the program and opportunities available outside the classroom seem to be well-received. It would be worth reaching out to current students or recent alumni via LinkedIn or a university-run forum for personal experiences in the program. Also, feel free to connect with the UCCS English department directly for more personalized information.

Lastly, don't forget to consider factors outside of academic programs, such as location, cost of attendance, available financial aid, campus life, and so on. Each aspect contributes significantly to the overall college experience, so it's important to make sure UCCS aligns with your overall needs and aspirations.
