Screenwriting Scholars - Where's the Spot in California?

What's up? My passion is storytelling and I'm setting my sights on studying screenwriting in college. I'm aware that California hosts many institutions that focus on this art, but any suggestions on which ones are the best? Your input is much appreciated.

Hello there! Sounds like you're on an exciting journey. California is indeed a hub for aspiring screenwriters, thanks to its proximity to Hollywood and the richness of its film industry. There are several institutions in California known for their screenwriting programs, here are a few:

1. University of Southern California (USC): USC's School of Cinematic Arts offers a Writing for Screen & Television BFA. With renowned faculty and alumni, USC's program provides an in-depth study of writing for film and television. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum and is known for producing many successful screenwriters.

2. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): The School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA has a respected Screenwriting BFA program. It provides a sophisticated understanding of the art and craft of screenwriting, allowing students to specialize in either film or television writing.

3. California Institute of the Arts (CalArts): The School of Film/Video at CalArts offers a BFA in Film and Video which can allow you to focus on screenwriting. The program compares favourably with its peers as it gives students the flexibility to incorporate other elements of film production into their study.

4. Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts: Known for its BFA in Creative Producing, it also heavily emphasize on the fundamentals of screenwriting. This offers students the unique opportunity to learn about the production process from start to finish.

Each program has different strengths, so you may want to consider other factors such as overall university culture, opportunities for internships in the film industry, size of the program, and resources available to students. Also, keep in mind that a thorough research, even virtual campus visits when possible, may be beneficial before deciding. Best of luck to you on your screenwriting journey!
