What on-campus jobs are beneficial for Education majors?

Hi friends, I'm headed into the Education field after high school and I'm trying to puzzle out how I'll balance the demands of coursework with making money. Can anyone suggest on-campus jobs that might suit an Education major?

Sure, happy to offer some suggestions. Working on campus can be a great way to earn money while developing skills relevant to your future career in education.

Firstly, consider positions at your university's tutoring or writing center. These roles can give you practical experience in teaching and coaching your peers, which can be valuable when you enter the classroom as a teacher. You'll also learn to adapt your instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, a critical skill in education.

Another good option is working as a resident advisor (RA) in a university dorm. While this job isn't strictly teaching-related, it requires many of the same skills: creating a positive community, mediating conflict, supporting students with different backgrounds and needs, and organizing events or activities. These kinds of experiences are important for future educators.

A job in the campus childcare or after-school program, if your university has one, can also provide valuable hands-on experience with children. You can observe child development up-close and even have a chance to try out teaching strategies.

Also look into work-study opportunities in the Education department. Working as an assistant to a professor or for the department itself can give you insular knowledge about the field, and can also help build relationships that could be valuable for references or mentorship down the line.

Finally, consider jobs in campus administrative offices. Working in offices like Admissions or the Registrar can offer insight into the administrative end of education, which can be helpful in understanding the larger context of how education systems work.

Remember, relevancy is important, so try to align your job with your career goals as much as possible. However, any job can provide opportunities for growth, so don't feel limited to only education-related positions. As an education major, you would benefit from a wide range of skills including communication, organization, and problem-solving. Good luck!
