Great PA Colleges for English Majors

I'm hoping to go to a college that's great for English majors, preferably in my home state, Pennsylvania. Could anyone recommend me some? How are the English department and campus life in these schools?

There are several Pennsylvania-based institutions renowned for their English programs. Here are a few you might consider:

1. University of Pennsylvania: As an Ivy League university, UPenn has a highly ranked English program, which includes tracks such as Literary and Cultural Studies, Critical and Cultural Theory, and Creative Writing. Classroom learning is often supplemented by extensive research opportunities. While there isn't Leisure Reading Collection funding, libraries have considerable digital access to novels, poems, and plays for course or capstone project work. Campus life is vibrant, with a plethora of extracurricular activities, cultural events, and nearly 300 student clubs and organizations.

2. Pennsylvania State University-University Park: The English department at Penn State offers diverse tracks from Creative Writing, Literary and Cultural Studies to Rhetoric and Composition. They host a number of literary speakers and events throughout the year. As a large public university, Penn State offers a dynamic campus life, populated with numerous student-led clubs, sporting events, and Greek life.

3. Swarthmore College: A small liberal arts college known for its rigorous academics and emphasis on undergraduate education. The English Literature program focuses on developing analytical skills, critical thinking, and understanding of literary traditions. Their community is close-knit, and they prioritize both social responsibility and intellectual development outside the classroom, with myriad clubs, speaker events, and community service opportunities.

Overall, selecting a school depends on not just the strength of the academic program but also the environment that aligns with your preferences. Attend virtual tours, speak with alum, or connect with current students – it's important to get a good sense of whether the college is a good fit for you overall.
