California colleges for enology, any advice?

Hey all, I'm really passionate about winemaking and I've heard California is the hotspot for enology. Anyone got some insight on the best colleges in California for studying this? I'd appreciate any input from students currently enrolled in these programs or those who've already graduated. Thanks in advance!

Certainly, there's a handful of well-regarded programs for Winemaking or Enology in California given the region's rich winemaking culture and history.

One of the top choices is University of California, Davis (UC Davis), which hosts a premier Viticulture and Enology program. Its integration with the world-class Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, as well as its proximity to Napa Valley and other top-tier viticulture areas, means students gain vast practical experience through internships and fieldwork.

Another great option is California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO). It offers a Wine and Viticulture program, in which you can choose different concentrations such as winemaking (enology), viticulture, and wine business. That said, this approach allows students to focus on specific areas of interest while ensuring they have a broad foundation in all aspects.

In addition, California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) has a well-known Viticulture and Enology program. The university owns a 120-acre vineyard and a commercial winery, and students participate in every aspect of winemaking.

Program-wise, expect to learn not only about grape cultivation and wine production but also wine chemistry, sensory analysis, marketing, and more.

Whichever institution you opt for, look for hands-on learning experiences and internship opportunities. Real-world experience in different wineries can greatly enhance your understanding of the field and might play a crucial role in shaping your future career.

Just a reminder that admission to these programs would typically require a high school background in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. You're likely to thrive more in the program with a good foundation in these subjects. Good luck with your decisions!
