Thinking of the Future: Military or College First?

Hi all! I'm weighing my options for the future, and both college and the military are on the table. I'm uncertain about the best order though. Is it generally better to join the military before or after college, from a future career perspective?

The ideal path to take--military or college first--ultimately depends on your personal goals, financial situation, and career objectives. Both choices offer unique opportunities and benefits.

Going to college first gives you a chance to mature, gain some independence, and explore areas of interest before committing to the military. Furthermore, a degree could qualify you for officer training school in the military, which would likely result in a better pay grade and leadership positions right out of the gate. You may also be eligible for ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) scholarships, which pay for your education in exchange for a service commitment after graduation.

Opting for the military first, on the other hand, allows you to gain significant life skills, discipline, and job experience right after high school. The military also provides generous educational benefits -- such as the GI Bill, or Tution Assistance program -- which you can use to pay for your degree during or after service. Joining the military before college could also give you a clearer sense of what you want to study, leading to more focused academic pursuits when you do attend college.

It's essential to consider these factors and maybe speak with a guidance counselor or military recruiter to more fully explore these options. It's a significant decision, so take the time you need to decide what's best for you.
