Maine’s Call to Teach

Hey everyone! I live in Maine and am looking to major in education. It's a bit daunting knowing where to begin. Does anyone have some suggestions for the best colleges for education majors in Maine?

In Maine, there are several colleges that stand out for their education programs. Here are a few to consider:

- The University of Maine in Orono: This college offers undergraduate education majors in elementary education and secondary education. They also have strong programs in special education and literacy. You can easily continue your studies at the graduate level with their Master's of Education programs.

- Bowdoin College: While Bowdoin itself does not offer a teaching credential program, they have an agreement with the nearby University of Maine in Orono where Bowdoin undergrads can begin taking education courses and then complete their teaching credential in a shortened amount of time after graduation.

- The University of Southern Maine: The School of Education and Human Development is known for preparing competent and caring teachers. They offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in education.

There are also colleges that offer online programs if that's something you're interested in. University of New England, for example, provides online graduate programs in education.

Before selecting a school, consider what grade level and/or subject you aspire to teach. Some colleges will be better suited to your specific teaching goals compared to others. For instance, if you intend to teach at the high school level, you'll need a school that offers a strong program in secondary education.

It's also worth thinking about whether you want to stay in Maine after graduation or move elsewhere. If you want to stay locally, look for colleges with programs that include partnerships with local schools for student-teaching opportunities. These placements can often lead to job offers after graduation and are a valuable way to network in the local education community.
