Hey, I'm currently a high school junior and I'm already thinking about my college options. I've got a strong inclincation toward graphic design and am curious about which UC and state colleges offer the best programs in California. Can anyone share their opinions or experiences?
Starting with the University of California system, UC Davis has an excellent Design Program that offers a specialization in Visual Communication where you can focus on graphic design.
UCLA also has a superb Design Media Arts (DMA) program, which is highly regarded for its innovative approach, integrating design theory, media art, and experimental practices. Notably, UCLA's admission process is highly selective, so they look for students with strong academic records, and the program itself requires a supplemental application which includes a portfolio.
Moving onto the California State University (CSU) system, San Diego State University’s School of Art and Design has a Graphic Design program that is considered one of the best in the CSU system. SDSU is known for its practical approach to design and provides students with the technical and intellectual skills they need to succeed.
Another state school to consider is California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. They have a concentration in Graphic Design as part of the BFA program that focuses on expansive thinking, project-based learning and real-world applications. Cal Poly Pomona's 'learn by doing' philosophy can be attractive to many students, as you get hands-on experience from the get-go.
Remember, the best program for you will not only offer a strong curriculum but also align with your own personal academic, career, and lifestyle goals. By researching and exploring these schools in greater detail, you should be able to determine what institution may be the best fit for you.
