What's studying at GA Military college like?

Hello there! I'm nearing the end of my junior year and looking at some college options. One of them on my list is the GA Military College. But I'm not really sure what the environment is like, academic pressure, professors, etc. Can anyone share their experiences or insights if you've attended, or know someone who has? Thanks!

Sure, I'd be happy to provide some insight about Georgia Military College (GMC) based on my understanding of the school's approach and what I've heard from students.

The college lives up to its name by embedding military values in its curriculum and daily routines. This means, the environment at the institution encourages discipline, punctuality, and respect, and moral character is highly valued. However, this doesn’t mean you need to join the military afterwards. While many students do take the ROTC route, the school isn’t a military service academy such as West Point or Naval Academy. So, there isn't an obligatory service agreement post-graduation unless it is attached to a certain scholarship.

Academically, GMC offers a variety of associate and bachelor programs. They have a robust Liberal Arts program, but they also offer programs in Business and Computer Science among others. The professors are often described as supportive, approachable and invested in their students' success. The class sizes tend to be smaller, allowing for a fairly strong student-to-faculty ratio. This enables more personalized instruction, which most students have found beneficial.

GMC has an open-door policy, which means they accept students irrespective of their past academic performance. Therefore, while the academic rigor can depend on the program, the overall pressure may not be as intense compared to some other schools. That said, they have a strong emphasis on preparing students for a four-year degree if they wish to transfer after an associate program completion.

The campus life at GMC is greatly influenced by the military-like atmosphere which includes mandatory Physical Training (PT) and formation drill in mornings, and students are required to be back in their dorms by 10PM, barring exceptions. However, students still find time to form sports teams, clubs and carry out extracurricular activities, similar to most other colleges.

Overall, GMC provides a unique blend of military disciplines with academic goals in an environment that prepares students not just for their degree, but also for life. However, whether GMC is a good fit will depend on how in line these attributes are with your personal preferences and goals. You should reach out to the Admissions Office at GMC who can provide you with more personalized information and perhaps arrange for you to virtually meet with current students or alumni.
