Pros and cons of online journalism courses for a high schooler?

As an aspiring journalist, I stumbled upon these online journalism classes for high schoolers. Could these classes be beneficial for my college application, or should I focus on extracurriculars like the school newspaper instead?

It's wonderful to hear that you're exploring your interests in journalism so early on! Both online journalism courses and contributing to the school newspaper could be beneficial for your college application. Still, it's important to consider what each option could bring to your growth and how it aligns with your future goals.

Online journalism courses can offer you a structured curriculum and possibly exposure to a wider range of topics within journalism than you might experience in a high school setting. They can also show initiative and self-motivation, two qualities that stand out on college applications. However, if these are paid courses, consider whether the cost is worth the investment at this stage.

Alternatively, involvement in the school newspaper can provide hands-on experience in writing, editing, and collaborating with peers, along with the opportunity to gain a leadership position over time. Such an activity would resonate with the Tier 3 level when it comes to extracurricular assessment, potentially moving to Tier 2 if you achieve significant recognition or a top role.

In an ideal scenario, doing both would showcase your passion for journalism from multiple angles and enhance your 'spike.' However, if you have to choose, opt for the one that you are more passionate about and can commit to at a high level. Remember, quality and depth of involvement will always trump quantity. Colleges are looking for committed individuals who have pursued their interests meaningfully and can contribute that passion to their campus community.
