Can I Do College While in the Military?

Hey! I'm seriously considering enlisting after high school but I also want to pursue a degree. Is it possible to be in the military and do college simultaneously? Has anyone done it? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Yes, it's certainly possible to pursue a higher education while serving in the military. Many active duty service members and veterans choose to start or continue their college education during or after their service. Here are a few options you could consider:

1) Online Programs: Many universities offer online degrees that can be completed at your own pace. This flexibility may be beneficial if your military duties have an unpredictable schedule.

2) Evening and Weekend Classes: Depending on your responsibilities and where you're stationed, you might be able to attend classes in the evening or over the weekend.

3) Military Schools: The U.S. military operates its own colleges, such as the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where active-duty service members can pursue a degree.

4) Service Academies and ROTC: If you desire a college education before serving, consider applying to one of the military service academies or joining a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program at a traditional university.

5) Tuition Assistance Programs: The military offers several programs to help service members pay for education. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program can cover up to 100% of tuition expenses for semester hours costing $250 or less. Courses and degree programs may be academic or technical and can be taken from two- or four-year institutions on-installation, off-installation, or by correspondence/online.

Remember, while it's feasible to balance military service and education, it could be challenging depending on your personal circumstances and military responsibilities. Every branch of service has different rules and benefits for pursuing education while serving, so be sure to talk with a recruiter or educational services officer to understand all your options and what would work best for you.
