Computer Science dream. Which California colleges should I target?

So, I'm a high school junior and a serious computer nerd. I know I want to major in CS and live in California, so obviously, I'm interested in staying here for college as well. Which are the best colleges in California for a computer science degree?

Hello there!

California is indeed a wonderful place to study Computer Science due to its proximity to Silicon Valley and thriving tech scene!

You're in luck, there are many excellent programs in the state. Here are several that you might want to look into:

1. Stanford University: One of the best schools in the country for Computer Science, Stanford has strong ties to Silicon Valley and an exceptional reputation in the tech world.

2. University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley): Their Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) program is highly regarded. Berkeley is well-known for its research opportunities and strong ties to the tech industry.

3. California Institute of Technology (Caltech): Though smaller and more focused on theoretical aspects of computer science, which may not be quite what you're looking for, Caltech's program is world-class.

4. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science houses a strong Computer Science department, and the school's location brings great internship opportunities.

5. University of California, San Diego (UCSD): UCSD's Computer Science program is highly respected, and the school as a whole is known to have something of a STEM focus.

6. University of Southern California (USC): USC's Viterbi School of Engineering offers an incredible Computer Science program and opportunities to network within the Los Angeles tech scene.

7. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO): Known for its "learn by doing" philosophy, Cal Poly's Computer Science program offers an abundance of hands-on experience.

8. Harvey Mudd College: This small liberal arts college offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to Computer Science education that is very highly regarded.

Remember that you also want to consider fit - all of these schools are excellent in Computer Science and located in California, but they can differ quite a bit in terms of overall vibe. Visit campuses, and consider class size, location, campus culture, and financial aid policies. You might also want to check if these schools have specific tracks or concentrations within Computer Science that align with your interests (for example, artificial intelligence, data science, etc.).

Finally, if you're looking for ways to pursue your passion for Computer Science while still in high school, check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which lists a range of computer science-related summer programs for high schoolers: https://blog.collegevine.com/high-school-computer-science-summer-programs/. Many of them will allow you to network with current Computer Science educators and professionals, who can give you more personalized guidance on which undergraduate institution would be right for you personally.

Participating in one of these programs could even give you a boost during the college process, as admissions officers love to see that you're taking initiative and exploring your interests outside of the classroom! Good luck with your college search!
