Using my accounting degree in the military?

Hey, I'm about to finish my accounting degree and I've been considering joining the military afterward. How could I utilize my degree if I go this route? Any advice would be appreciated!

Certainly, you can absolutely use your accounting degree in a military career in several different ways.

First, all branches of the military have finance and accounting roles, where you would be able to directly apply what you've learned during your degree course. Military financial management includes not only the accounting and reporting of military activities but also the efficient management of funds, cost analysis, budgeting, and financial control.

Second, an understanding of accounting can also be valuable in the logistics and supply chain fields. Managing and supplying the vast amounts of materials the military needs involves significant budgeting, cost management, and understanding of financial processes - all areas where your accounting knowledge would be valuable.

Third, the military offers an Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer Training School (OTS) that you can attend after enlisting, where you could potentially rise in the ranks more quickly because of your college degree. In an officer role, you could oversee budgets and finance-related work even if it's not your main duty.

Lastly, an accounting degree could also be useful should you decide to transition out of the military later. Having military experience plus a degree in accounting can open numerous opportunities in the private sector or in government accounting roles.

As you plan your potential military path, consider speaking with a recruiter from every branch to get an understanding of where your degree could be most useful. They will be able to provide specific career paths and training schemes that could suit your accounting background.

Remember, as with any career decision, consider not only how your degree aligns with different roles, but also what you personally find most gratifying and where you want to make an impact.
