Returning to College after Military Service

I've been in the Army for a few years now and I've been thinking about going back to college. What should I prepare for? Are there any resources for people in my situation that you guys could recommend?

Transitioning from military service back to college can be a unique adventure, and it actively involves a shift in routines, norms, and expectations. Here's what you might prepare for and some resources that could be beneficial.

Firstly, be prepared for a different pace and structure. In the military, the daily routine and expectations are clearly defined. However, in college, independent time management is essential. Lectures and assignments may follow a less regimented schedule, and it's up to you to set aside time for studying.

Secondly, while the camaraderie of the military is unique, there are plentiful opportunities to build connections in college as well. Engage in extracurricular activities, clubs or college events. There are many diverse communities within a college setting, and often, there are organizations specifically for veterans.

One of the major resources for veterans is the GI Bill benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. This can provide substantial financial support to cover the costs of tuition, books, and even housing.

Another great resource is the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program, which is designed to provide free educational services to help veterans prep for postsecondary education. You can check with your target college's veteran services office for more details.

Lastly, the Student Veterans of America (SVA) is a national organization composed of several school-specific SVA chapters that offer peer-to-peer networks for veterans who are attending college. I've observed that many have found this community both welcoming and understanding about their unique circumstances.

Remember, it's essential to ensure the college you're considering understands and supports the needs of student veterans. That might mean looking at the school's veteran services office, mentoring programs, or other supports in place to ease the transition.
