Path to military service through medical school?

Senior here, I'm committed to studying medicine and I've also always been interested in eventually serving in the military. If I go through college and then medical school, does the military have specific programs or pathways that would allow me to combine these interests?

Yes, indeed, the military offers programs that allow you to pursue a medical degree while also serving in the armed forces. In fact, an excellent option for med school students interested in military service is the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). Through this program, the Army, Navy, and Air Force pay for your entire tuition and other associated costs of attending an accredited medical, osteopathic, or dental school in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.

In exchange for the scholarship, you will be required to serve as a military medical officer for a specified period of time after your residency. This is often referred to as a "payback" or service obligation. It's worth noting that while on scholarship, the military will also provide a monthly stipend for living expenses.

Another potential route for you could be the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS). This is essentially a federal service medical school that prepares students for military medical careers. Tuition is completely covered, but unlike HPSP, students are active-duty officers receiving full military pay and benefits. Graduates of USUHS owe a seven-year service commitment after residency.

Each of these options comes with its own benefits and drawbacks, and the choice will depend on your individual circumstances and career goals. Do some careful research and consider reaching out to a military recruiter for an in-depth discussion of your options. They can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation and objectives. Good luck!
