Hi guys, currently I'm looking into the history of the University of North Georgia (UNG) as a military college. Can someone provide me with some details or point me to some valid resources? I'm specifically interested in how it became a senior military college and its major contributions. Thanks heaps!

The University of North Georgia (UNG) holds a special place in the history of U.S. military education as one of only six senior military colleges in the country.

To understand the origin of UNG's military status, we have to go back to its inception. The university was established in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College, one of the first land grant institutions in the state. With the Morrill Act of 1862 allowing for the creation of land-grant colleges, the military training component was introduced. This was reflective of a nationwide trend towards including military tactics in college curriculums as a result of the Act.

In the early years, the college functioned similar to a military academy where all male students were required to participate in military training. The college received its designation as a senior military college in 1920 when the federal government created the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), providing a pathway for higher level military training and commissioning of its graduates into the armed services.

UNG’s distinctive military structure still exists today in its Corps of Cadets, a nationally recognized program that blends academic, military, and leadership training. The Corps of Cadets is specifically designed to provide leadership training and prepare students for service in the Army as officers, amongst other careers.

UNG has also contributed significantly to the military through its alumni. UNG counts hundreds of generals among its graduates, and many of them have served in active duty in all major conflicts since the Civil War. Hence, UNG’s impact on the U.S. military extends far beyond its campus.

Lastly, keep in mind that UNG isn’t just a military school—it’s more like a school within a school. While the Corps of Cadets is a major part of UNG, civilian students make up a large part of the university and have access to the same academic programs as Cadets.

I hope this offers a brief overview of UNG's history as a military college. You might want to dig further into sources like the university's own archives or libraries for more in-depth details and accounts.
