How does Military Service Show on a College Transcript?

I'm seriously considering enlisting after high school, but wondering how my military service will appear on my academic transcript when I decide to attend college afterwards. Can anyone give me some insight on this? Thanks in advance!

Firstly, it's great that you're considering all your options after high school, and military service can indeed provide a wealth of experiences and skills that can be an asset in your college journey later on.

Regarding your question, military service generally does not show up directly on your academic transcripts since transcripts typically focus solely on academic coursework. Academically, only coursework completed at educational institutions gets listed on a college transcript, such as high school courses, community college courses, or university courses.

Separately, though, you may have opportunities to earn college credit through your military service. The American Council on Education (ACE) provides transcripts for eligible military personnel that detail their military training and occupational specialties. Colleges can use these ACE transcripts to award college credit based on the equivalent academic coursework your training matches. Not all schools accept ACE credits, though, so it's crucial to confirm with the college you're interested in attending.

It's also worth mentioning that details about your military service, including the length of enlistment and type of training, should be included in the non-academic or professional section of your application rather than on your transcript. Many schools will ask about any gaps in your academic timeline, and that's where you would mention military service. Including this information can provide context about the experiences that have shaped you, and it can also demonstrate qualities such as leadership, resilience, discipline, and teamwork.

Just remember that each college or university might have different policies regarding how they incorporate military service into their admissions considerations, so it may be helpful to reach out directly to the colleges you're interested in for more specific information. Good luck!
