Using Military Experience in College

Hey all! I guess it's an odd question but hear me out. Imagine a scenario where a military member is currently in service, but eager to pursue college. How can he/she use their experiences in the military to their advantage at college? Are there skills or experiences that could help with coursework or maybe even earning credits? Thanks for any insights!

Absolutely, there are several ways in which individuals serving in the military can leverage their experiences and skills when they transition into college.

1. Credits for Military Training: Quite a few colleges offer academic credits for military training. The American Council on Education (ACE) has a program that evaluates military training and experience for academic credit. You would need to provide your JST (Joint Services Transcript), which records all your military training and experience, and this would be evaluated for college credits.

2. Use Skills Gained in Military Service: Time management, leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, and emergency response are just a few of the transferable skills you might have gained during your military service. These skills are invaluable in a college environment and can aid in your academic success.

3. College Essays and Interviews: Using your military experiences in your college essays and interviews can make for compelling narratives. It can demonstrate your resilience, commitment, problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.

4. Financial Aid & Scholarships: As a current or former military member, you might qualify for the GI Bill, which can pay for your tuition and fees, provide a monthly housing allowance, and give you an annual stipend for books and supplies. There are also several scholarships specifically for veterans and active-duty military.

5. Career Advancement: Having a military background can provide you with a unique edge when it comes to internships, job placements, and networking opportunities, particularly for fields such as national security, government, or even business.

To maximize these opportunities, it's essential to research universities that are military friendly. These schools often have resources and support systems in place specifically for their military student population.
