Military Options: What's the Scope for College Support?

Hello everyone. I'm giving serious thought to joining the military after high school. How much do they assist with the cost of college? I'm not just looking at tuition. I'm hoping the funding would also help cover auxiliary expenses, like books and accommodation. Anyone have info on this? Any input is much appreciated!

There's potential for significant college support from the military, so you're on the right track with your thinking. Perhaps the most well-known program is the Post-9/11 GI Bill which covers not only tuition and fees (up to the cost of the most expensive public school tuition and fees in your state), but also provides a stipend for housing, money for books and supplies, and even potentially a relocation allowance if you move from a rural area to attend school. The amount of support you receive is determined by your length of service.

The other key program is the Montgomery GI Bill, which also provides a monthly education benefit. With this program, the amount you receive depends on your length of service, the type of training or education you are seeking, your category, and if DOD put extra money in your MGIB fund while you were on active duty.

In addition to the GI Bills, the military branches offer specific scholarship programs like the Army's ROTC scholarships, which cover tuition or room and board, and provide an allowance for books and a monthly stipend. The Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps have similar offers.

Lastly, do remember that the military also offers tuition assistance programs while you're still serving. These benefits can be a great way to start taking college courses while you're still on active duty.

One note of caution: these benefits are tied to your time in service and in some cases, branches of the military require a minimum term of enlistment to qualify for education benefits.

In any case, the scope of military support for higher education can be significant, and it's a great step you're taking to gather information before making a decision. Best of luck!
