Military Support for College Cost - Post-Service

Hi all, I was wondering how much assistance the military provides for college education if you decide to serve after high school and then head to college. I heard veterans have some educational benefits. What kind of financial support do they offer? Any insights would really help me out. Thanks!

Absolutely, there are certainly educational benefits for veterans. The primary source of educational assistance for veterans is the Post-9/11 GI Bill. This Bill provides educational benefits for service members who have served on active duty for 90 or more days after September 10, 2001.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill offers several types of assistance, and the amount you receive can depend on how long you served, amongst other factors. Firstly, it covers tuition and fees. This support is given directly to the school and is capped at the maximum in-state tuition at a public institution in your state.

It also provides a monthly housing allowance, based on the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents, at the location of the school where you're enrolled. If you're attending online classes, the housing allowance is half the national average BAH rate.

There's also a stipend of up to $1000 per year for books and supplies. Again, the actual amount can vary depending on how long you served on active duty.

This Bill can provide up to 36 months of benefits, which generally must be used within 15 years of your last period of active duty.

One more thing to note: there's something called the Yellow Ribbon Program which can help you with tuition and fees at certain schools that might exceed the maximum cap under the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Schools voluntarily enter into an agreement with Veterans Affairs to fund outstanding fees above those provided by the Bill, with the VA matching the school’s contribution.

Be sure to check out the official website for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program for the most accurate and comprehensive information. It's great to see you considering your options, and remember that the benefits the military offers for education can be a tremendous help.

Just remember to consider all factors of military service as you make your decision. Talk to service members and veterans to get a clear understanding of what the commitment entails, and meet with a military recruiter to clarify any points of the service agreement. Then, you'll truly be able to decide if it's the right path for you.
