Navigating the Transition: Preparing for College after Serving in the Military?

Hey folks, I've been engaged in active service for a few years, but I'm seriously considering returning to school and picking up where I left off. Any advice on how to prepare for the transition from the military to college? Do colleges offer specific resources for veterans? Looking for some guidance!

Certainly! Transitioning from military to student life is a significant change, but many colleges offer robust resources to assist veterans like you.

Firstly, do thorough research on the colleges you're considering as some institutions have dedicated offices for veteran support, while others might simply lump services under a broader non-traditional students' program. Look for schools with well-established programs that offer comprehensive assistance, such as career services, transition resources, and even dedicated space for veterans on campus. Examples of such resources might include veteran-specific orientation, support groups, or academic help.

Next, make sure to understand and take advantage of the educational benefits you are eligible for as a veteran, such as the GI Bill. The Post-9/11 GI Bill, for instance, covers tuition and fees, provides a monthly housing allowance, and offers a stipend for books and supplies up to a certain amount. You've earned these benefits through your service, so make sure they are working for you! However, understand the specifics of your benefits, as some may affect the financial aid you could be offered.

Furthermore, start anticipating the parts of the student experience that may be challenging for you as a military veteran. The green, fresh-out-of-high-school college crowd might be a different social environment from what you're used to. As such, fostering relationships with other veterans on campus could offer you a comfortable avenue to share experiences and gain emotional support.

Academically, brush up on some basic coursework if it's been a while since you were last in a classroom. You might find resources like MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) helpful in this regard as they allow you to take your own pace at covering materials.

In terms of applications, use your experiences in the military to your advantage. Translating your military experience into college applications can demonstrate leadership, resilience, and teamwork–traits highly valued by colleges.

Remember, every institution will vary in terms of resources and veteran friendliness, but there is certainly a lot of support out there to help you navigate this transition successfully. Best of luck in your college journey!
