Colleges with Fewer General Ed Requirements

Hey there! I'm looking for colleges that have the least amount of general education requirements. I already know what field I want to go into and would like to focus on that as much as possible. Does anyone have suggestions?

Some colleges are known for having less rigorous general education requirements. Here are a few examples:

1. Brown University: Brown has an Open Curriculum, meaning the university does not have any general requirements outside of one's concentration. You're free to explore courses across a wide range of fields, or dive right into your intended major.

2. Amherst College: Similar to Brown, Amherst follows an Open Curriculum philosophy, where students are not required to take any particular courses outside of their major.

3. Wesleyan University: While Wesleyan does have some general education expectations, they're quite flexible. Instead of requirements, they have "areas of study" students are encouraged to explore, but the choice ultimately remains with the student.

4. Columbia College Chicago: This creative arts school doesn’t have common general education requirements, but instead has “core curriculum” focused on the arts and media.

5. Hamilton College: Hamilton encourages students to study what they love by eliminating distribution requirements, although they do stress the importance of exploring different disciplines.

6. Smith College: Smith employs an "open curriculum," where outside of the major, there are no distribution requirements.

Remember to consider the overall fit of the school, and not only the general education requisites. Look at other important factors such as location, size, extracurricular opportunities, and housing when making your college choice. You could also consider institutions that treat general education differently, such as through interdisciplinary or topic-focused courses rather than traditional breadth requirements.
